* IMF slowed rate of gold sales by 40 pct in Oct. vs Sept.
* Cumulative on-market sales 148.6 tonnes by October (Recasts, adds details, background)
NEW YORK/WASHINGTON Nov 29 (Reuters) - The International Monetary Fund has slowed the rate of selling its gold by 40 percent in October from the previous month, as interest among central banks to own the metal increased as a hedge against economic uncertainty.
The IMF sold 628,000 ounces (19.5 tonnes) of gold in October as part of its previously announced open-market bullion sales plan, an IMF spokesman said on Monday.
October's gold sales were sharply below the 1.04 million ounces sold in September, when nearly a third of the sale was going to Bangladesh.
The IMF said late last year it would sell 403.3 tonnes or one-eighth of its total gold reserves to boost its lending resources. The fund said the sale would avoid disruptions to the gold market.
Many analysts expect world central banks as a group could become net buyers this year despite IMF's gold sales, reversing a trend in the last several decades.
Based on information from the IMF's Financial Statistics database, the spokesman said cumulative on-market sales of IMF gold to the end of October was 4.8 million ounces (148.6 tonnes).
The sales were part of IMF plans announced in February to begin phased sales of 191.3 tonnes of gold in the open market this year. [ID:nN17152668]
Gold previously sold directly to central banks were 222 tonnes to India, 200 tonnes to Mauritius, 10 tonnes to Sri Lanka and 10 tonnes to Bangladesh.
Gold prices hit an all-time high of $1,424.10 early this month before retreating. The rally was driven in part by expectations that the Federal Reserve would buy back U.S. Treasuries to stimulate economic growth.
However, gold's rally appeared to stall despite concerns about the fiscal health of euro zone economies after a bailout on debt-stricken Ireland and rising tensions on the Korean peninsula.
On Monday, spot gold XAU= traded at around $1,365 an ounce. Still, the metal has rallied more than five-fold from about $250 an ounce back in 2001. (Reporting by Frank Tang and Lesley Wroughton; Editing by Alden Bentley)

Korean, European Concerns Could Nudge Gold Higher Next Week

By Allen Sykora
Of Kitco News
http://www.kitco.com/
(Kitco News) -Renewed hostilities on the Korean Peninsula and the ongoing European sovereign-debt saga are likely to remain in the forefront next week, and if so, should be supportive for gold.
Traders and analysts said investors are nervous that other European nations, such as Portugal, will need to follow Ireland in seeking financial aid to resolve debt issues. Meanwhile, North Korea, which fired artillery toward a South Korean island earlier this week, warned that U.S.-South Korean plans for military exercises put the peninsula on the brink of war.
“Obviously, this Korean story is not going to stop,” said Afshin Nabavi, head of trading at MKS Finance. “And the current European banking situation is also going to continue.”
Thus, he and others said, gold should find more support.
These issues also have contributed to strength in the U.S. dollar lately, and a stronger greenback in turn often puts pressure on gold. Some observers said, however, there have been times in the recent past when gold and the dollar have risen in tandem as both benefit from safe-haven flows, and this may well be the case in the coming days.

UPDATE 2-More gold imports may pressure Vietnam's currency
* Gold imports could add to pressure on dong
* Gold quotas issued after high inflation
* Dec inflation seen in double digit-Barclays Capital (Recasts, adds trade deficit, inflation, PM's comment)
By Ho Binh Minh
HANOI, Nov 25 (Reuters) - Vietnam's central bank has granted more quotas to import gold by year-end, in a bid to cool domestic gold prices, a state-run newspaper reported, though the step could increase pressure on the dong currency given the country's trade deficit.
Vietnam's January-November trade deficit eased 2.4 percent to $10.66 billion from $10.92 billion recorded in the same period last year, the government said on Thursday, well below a government target to limit it at 20 percent of exports.
The rise this year in the gold price and the dollar/dong exchange rate were among the reasons for higher market prices, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said on Wednesday, raising fears Vietnam's inflation for the whole year may jump to double-digit figures. On Thursday, the additional quotas did not have any impact on regional gold markets as the central bank's move was a continuation of its previous bid to cool domestic prices, a Singapore-based trader said.

Gold Prices Settle Higher as Koreas Clash - The Street.com
NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Gold prices rose Tuesday as traders digested contagion worries in Europe and an erupting conflict between North and South Korea.
Gold for December delivery settled $19.80 higher to $1,377.60 an ounce at the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. The gold price Tuesday has traded as high as $1,382.90 and as low as $1,355.60.
The U.S. dollar index was adding 1.29% to $79.70 while the euro continued sliding 1.99% to $1.33 vs. the dollar. The spot gold price Tuesday was adding $8.40, according to Kitco's gold index.
Gold prices popped on safe-haven buying as gold fulfilled its role as a hedge against crises. Spilling over from Monday were continued worries that Spain and Portugal won't be able to survive without a European Union/International Monetary Fund bailout despite Ireland's commitment to take financial aid.
The 10-year Treasury yield for Spain and Portugal closed Monday at 4.72% and 6.9%, respectively. Although lower than last week before Ireland took bailout money, the yields are still high compared to Germany's long-term borrowing rate of 2.63%.

Forget high prices - gold buying spurts in India
With gold-backed loans on the rise and rural India enjoying the fruits of a bumper monsoon, farmers are stashing away their savings in gold and precious metals
Author: Shivom SethPosted: Thursday , 18 Nov 2010
In the first 9 months of 2010, gold demand in India rose by as much as 79%, despite prices touching astronomical new highs. Between January and September 2010, gold demand went up to 650 tonnes from the 363 tonnes recorded in the same period in 2009. Prices in the same period rose by over 20% from the low of Rs 18,594 (US$409.6) per 10 gram of last year.
Releasing data on buying patterns, the World Gold Council said in absolute rupee terms, the demand for gold stood at Rs 1,133.02bn (US$24.96bn) this year, up from the Rs 1,053.2bn (US$24.9bn) registered over the same period last year.
Despite such a massive jump in consumption, analysts following the yellow metal are not completely unnerved. In fact, they anticipate a further inflation in the 79% number by the time the year ends, with the foresight of the experienced.

METALS OUTLOOK: Gold Falls On Week, But Outlook Still Firm 19 November 2010, 03:00 p.m.

Of Kitco News

(Kitco News) - Gold prices ended lower on the week after a stronger dollar put pressure on precious metals prices, but the markets managed to hold above key support levels which should give support into next week’s action.
Futures prices for the week on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange dipped for gold, with the December down 1% at $1,352.30 an ounce. December silver meanwhile, rose 4.8% at $27.179 an ounce.
After being bloodied and bruised for several weeks, the dollar rallied a bit versus the euro this week over jitters regarding the solvency of Irish banks. The European Union, the International Monetary Fund and the United Kingdom all pledged to help the beleaguered banks, even as the Irish government attempted to fend off the aid.
Dollar strength weighed on precious metals and kept prices under $1,400 the entire week. “That doesn’t mean this market is bearish, not all, this market is still extremely bullish, but we’re in a correction with extreme volatility,” said Scott Meyers, New York branch manager with the Pioneer Futures division of MF Global.

China's gold consumption set to rise by 4%
China's gold consumption is set to rise by about four percent from a year earlier to 430 tons this year, said a senior executive of China National Gold Corp, one of the country's largest gold producers.
Sun Zhaoxue, the company's general manager, said that accelerating domestic output will reduce China's need to import.
"China's gold production has been gradually increasing and will continue to do so in the coming years, so imports could start to gradually fall," Sun told a conference in the port city of Tianjin.
Sun's view contradicts that of most analysts, who expect China's gold imports to rise in the coming years, as demand for bullion increases from both official and private investment purchases.
"The rapid growth in China's gold consumption will stay intact in the coming years, thanks to an expanding pool of gold products and growing investment demand on inflation fears," said Shi Heqing, an analyst at State-backed research firm Antaike.
"As the government gradually opens up the gold market, gold imports should be on the rise."

NEW YORK | Mon Nov 15, 2010 3:56pm EST The metal shrugged off a 3 percent drop on Friday as worries about euro zone debt woes and weaker U.S. Treasuries prices prompted underlying safe-haven buying. Silver fell about 1 percent but showed signs of steadying after a volatile week last week.
"Gold is stabilizing from last week's significant sell-off and liquidation plunge, and investors are just taking a pause right now to determine the next direction," said Frank McGhee, head precious metals trader of Integrated Brokerage Services.
"We had very little follow-through selling today, and the market was well bid even in the face of the stronger dollar," McGhee said.
Technical buying also helped boost U.S. December gold futures as prices found support and rebounded after briefly dipping below their 20-day moving average, McGhee said. (Click here for a technical column on spot gold: ID:N15142669)

METALS OUTLOOK: Weaker Tone Could Follow Precious Metals Into Next Week
![]() | By Debbie Carlson Of Kitco News http://www.kitco.com/ |
December gold futures prices on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange ended at $1,365.50 an ounce on the week, a drop of 2.3%. Silver fell 3%, to $25.942 an ounce.
The dollar has been on an upslope this week as concerns over Eurozone debt, specifically Ireland’s woes, caused some investors to abandon riskier assets and return to the U.S. dollar, which lost a bit of its “unloved” status. Investors are very heavily short the dollar. Whether they are simply unraveling some of that bearishness or if the dollar is set for a change in direction, the greenback could rise a fair amount since it has been pummeled so much lately. That could pressure gold, analysts said.

Fake gold bars out of tungsten a counterfeit story By MERLIN LAFLEUR, 2009/12/02
Short-term investments are very bullish, erratic, unpredictable and undependable. But, long term investments are, relatively, considered safe and reliable. Precious metals like gold and silver are considered to be true money, and governments have been bastardizing precious metals since the night of time. It's all about printing fake money anyway. Even as stocks were losing their value, gold was marching steadily, increasing by five percent in US dollars.
However, this 'buy and hold' strategy might not work anymore as the sub-prime crisis has shaken this belief in the long term investment mode. Now, has gold joined the bandwagon of safe long-term investment going awry by treading the path of the sub-prime crisis?

Cara Pemilikan Harta Dalam Islam (Al-Milkiyah)
